Welcome to Marshfield Primary School

Marshfield Primary School transferred to its present site in September 1967. It was built to serve the communities of Coedkernew, Marshfield, Peterstone, St. Brides, Castleton, and Michaelstone-y-Fedw.

The school is positioned in a semi-rural area within easy access of Newport, Cardiff and the M4 motorway. This has made it a popular area for residential development.  The result of this development, along with applications from out-of-catchment families, has resulted in a rise in pupil role.

The school, through the Welsh Office 'Popular School's Initiative', was able to increase its teaching accommodation in 1997 to offer 11 teaching areas, a quiet room, open area and library. A further classroom was added in 2000 and two foundation phase classrooms, a music room and an additional learning needs room were added in 2005.

The area the school serves is rich in history and environmental importance. Full use is made of this valuable resource by the school. The school strives to maintain a village school atmosphere, whilst providing a rich diet of educational opportunities geared to life in the new millennium.

Marshfield is proud of its close links with parents and the communities it serves, and strives to work in close harmony for the benefit of all the children.

School Aims

The over-arching aim of the school is to provide children with the opportunities to develop socially, morally, intellectually, culturally, physically and spiritually. Through a caring and stimulating environment, the school will aim to achieve these targets through:

  • the development of self motivation, evaluation and targeting;
  • helping each child to read, write, speak and listen properly and assist them in discovering the wealth of pleasure that can be derived form the use of the English language;
  • helping each child to learn the basic computational skills and to apply them in problem solving and investigational activities;
  • creating a positive attitude towards English and mathematics in order for them to feel confident in the challenges set;
  • development of scientific skills and knowledge in order for them to make sense of the world in which they live;
  • the development of an enquiring mind, where the acquisition of knowledge is a journey they are confident in taking;
  • their studies in history and geography, the understanding of their environment, their Welsh heritage and culture, and the world in which they live;
  • offering opportunities for children to listen, compose and perform music, and enjoy it for pleasure;
  • providing many and varied opportunities for children to explore the world of art through study and design, and through the use of different mediums to create opportunities for making and evaluating working models and structures using different mediums including food and textiles;
  • development of skills in using micro computers and control technology to support curriculum areas and for problem solving;
  • development of skills and techniques in a variety of sports and activities in an enjoyable way;
  • links with businesses in order that children have an opportunity to experience aspects of the world of work;
  • sex education which is taught across the curriculum, and which stresses the importance of caring for their physical well being, and the role of the family;
  • a knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith and tolerance of other faiths;
  • the development of moral values;providing a secure and happy environment where each child feels valued, and cared for;
  • working with parents and the community in partnership and harmony.
