Marshfield Primary School Council

Council Vision statement
We hope to achieve an environment that provides an understanding helpline for problems and worries within the school community.
School Council bring up important issues such as improving the school environment, pupil voice, peer mentoring, healthy eating, safety within the school, along with supporting charities by holding fund raising events.
We ensure that all children in the school have their voice heard by holding regular council meeting where the year representative voice any concerns and issues brought up by other students in their class.
Who we are and how do we work?
We are a group of elected children who represent the whole pupil voice. Each class has their own representative and we have a teacher representative to help to chair the meetings. We meet on a weekly basis keeping minutes of each meeting and liaise with the head teacher and other adults in the school community.
Come and meet the School Council!
Peer Mentoring Autumn 2008
All our junior School Council representatives along with the trained Peer Mentors in Yr 5 represented our voice in the community when they attended a 'Bullying' seminar organised by Newport City Council. The children had the opportunity to voice their thoughts and opinions on how to address and overcome bullying in schools. They worked with children from other schools in our cluster group to create a policy and package to help pupils and teachers work together to put an end to bullying.
The children also created a presentation of all the activities our school got involved with during 'Anti Bullying' Week. They delivered this presentation in an assembly to all the children at High Cross Primary School. Mount Pleasant Primary School shared their activities with us during an assembly that week.

Red Nose Day Fund Raising Spring 2009
This term we focused on raising the children's awareness of the needy world around us and how each one of us can make a difference. Each School Council Representative talked to their class about 'funny' ways to raise money. After compiling a list the children voted to wear their pyjamas to school, plus work with their own class to raise the most money. Every class supported the event and a phenomenal amount of £1305 was raised for Red Nose Day. Well done everyone!
Student Voice Summer 2009
This term we are focussing on raising the children's awareness of Student Voice. The School Council have worked together to design a questionnaire for all pupils from Y2 - Y6 to find out their understanding of Student Voice and how it can be developed further in Marshfield Primary School. As a school Council we will then put an action plan together to develop all children's understanding and encourage them to exercise their voice appropriately.
We are planning to:
- Hold an assembly.
- Reported to staff and Governors
- Discussed things with our classes regularly
- Encourage children to share their suggestions on the post it wall and in the suggestion box
- Met every week to discuss the things that are happening
- Regularly feedback to our classes
