Read a Million Words in Wales

Children come across many words every day, at home, the park, leisure centre, shops, cafes and in the street.

For example:

Road signs, park signs, street adverts - 10 words

TV adverts, warnings, shop recepits - 20 words

food packets, shop adverts, games instructions - 40 words

cafe menus, short stories - 60 words

TV listings, junk mail, leaflets - 80 words

websites, comics, sports magazines - 100 words.

The word count adds up very quickly.

Not every word needs to be counted. Estimate to the nearest 10.
