Spring Term W/C 15th January 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to all our community. We hope that you had an exciting Christmas with your friends and family but also managed to have some rest and relaxation!

School Logo

After the successful implementation of our new shared community vision, we have decided that we would like to change our current school logo to reflect our new thoughts and aspirations. Over the next few weeks, pupils will undertake sessions to discuss what they think should be our new logo. Eventually we are hoping that one or a combination of their designs will form part of the new logo which will appear on our uniforms, website and all forms of communication.

Staffing Update

We welcome two members of staff back to school in January and very much look forward to seeing them again. Mrs. J. Cervi will return on a job-share basis with Mrs Stokes in Year 2 and Mrs. E. Cooper will return for 3 days a week and will be covering PPA sessions.

Congratulations to Mrs. C. James on the birth of her little boy a few days before Christmas. We wish her and all the family well and hope that we will get to see the new arrival very soon!

Wednesday, 14th February

Numeracy Open evening for Parents (including national test information)

As part of our school development plan we are using a range of strategies to improve pupils’ reasoning and independent thinking skills. We would like to give parents the opportunity to attend interactive workshop sessions to discuss a range of ways in which pupils can be helped at home. In addition, Mrs. Lawrence-Dent will be completing a short presentation regarding the on-line MyMaths website during each session. She will also be available after the meetings to further discuss any enquiries you may have.

The sessions will also demonstrate how questions that appear in the tests need to be approached. We urge parents to attend if possible as the tips and guidelines will be incredibly beneficial. For your convenience, each workshop will run twice.

Sessions will run as follows:

At 2.30pm-3.00pm (session 1) and 3.15-4.15pm (session 2)

Nursery/Reception parents- Mrs. Elliott’s room (for session 2 please use the foundation phase entrance)

Year 1 and Year 2 parents- Mrs. Jones’ room (for session 2 please use the foundation phase entrance)

Year 3 and 4 – Miss Wilson’s room (for session 1 and 2 please use the Panda’s entrance)

Year 5 and 6- Miss Davies’ room. (for session 1 and 2 please use the Panda’s entrance)

National Tests for Year 2-Year 6 are scheduled between the 2nd May to the 9th May. It is essential that pupils attend school on these days.

Year 5 Hilston Park Information Evening

There will be an information evening for parents on Wednesday 7th February at 5.30pm with Mr. Stokes. An information letter will be circulated later this week with further details.

Sharing Celebrations

Congratulations to Jessica R (Yr6 LD) who, on the 19th December, won the Autumn National Indoor Velodrome Mini League and is now going for the Winter League and Icebreaker series in the New Year.

Well done, also, to Zahara S (Yr5 LS) who gained a distinction in her Grade 1 piano exam.

Congratulations to Cameron E (Yr6 EM) who competed in the Welsh Athletics Junior Open on Saturday 6th January in the Under 13 long jump. He came 6th overall and 1st in the South East Wales regional championship.

Pandas Parking

Please could we remind parents who use Pandas that they must park either outside the school or use the drop off zones at the far end of the car park before walking their children to the Pandas entrance. We have had reports of dangerous driving in the car park and of parents parking in designated staff car spaces.

Keeping pupils safe is paramount.

Chartwells News

We have been informed that there are catering positions available within Newport Primary schools. If you are interested, please contact Yvonne on 07938 842353 for further information.

Music lessons

Three spaces have become available in woodwind for years 4 and up. If you think your child would be interested in learning to play either the clarinet or the flute, please contact the office.

Community News

It has been brought to our attention by a member of our community that there has been a huge increase in the numbers of crisp packets and sweet wrappers being thrown on the pavement along Marshfield Road. Could everyone please ensure that all litter is placed in the bins provided along the road.

Also, please note there will be a litter pick being held on Sunday 11th February at 10.30am, starting at Marshfield Village Hall.

Back again, the wonderful Marshfield residence. As you know, we are the Marshfield bloggers and it is our job to update you with the weekly news about the children. Therefore, we are beginning with the wonderful Year 5!

Year 5:

This week the year 5 children have been working their socks off with some amazing pieces of work. In Maths, they have been focusing on division and learning the different methods of working out sums with division. In addition to this, they have made great progress with their topic, ‘St Lucia.’ They have been learning about its natural system and what it would look like over-developed. During their liquids, solids and gases investigation, they have been studying very hard to learn all about what substances are soluble or insoluble. Finally, this week, they have loved presenting their home learning about topics they would like to explore during the spring term. They have chosen a whole range of topics including the Victorians, the 1960’s and even way back to the Ancient Greeks!

That is it from us today; we hope you had a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

PFA News

Happy 2018 and welcome to another exiting year!

The aim of the Parents and Friends Association is to enhance all of our children's school life, experience and memories.  We work together to raise money to buy equipment, and to contribute towards school trips and much, much more.

It is open to all parents and carers, with a small friendly committee and an enthusiastic group of helpers. Everyone is encouraged to get involved, even if they only have a small amount of time available. All families automatically become members of the PFA when their child joins our school.

This year we would like to organise some more events for the parents, a little bit of fun on a good night out, to help encourage some great fundraising but also help foster relationships between the school and community.

Our annual Curry and Quiz night will be held on Thursday 8th February at Y Maerun, Marshfield from 7pm. Tickets are £10 per person, including a curry meal and will be available to buy from Wednesday 17th January.

We also would like to remind you of a few more events during this term:

Tuesday 13th February- PFA Valentine Disco 5.15-6.15 p.m. FP, 6.30-7.30 p.m. KS2

Tuesday 6th March and Wednesday 7th March PFA Mother`s Day shops

Easter Colouring competition (date to be confirmed)

We run events for the children because they enjoy them (and so do we!) and we are very grateful for the help we receive but mostly these events are run by a handful of people. More hands makes light work, so if you would like to become more actively involved in any aspect of the PFA, have a skill that you feel could be valuable, or would like to run and take ownership of a specific event, then please let us know.

If you cannot attend our meetings but have any suggestions for fundraising events that we could organise or any other enquiries please contact Zoya Higgins on 07766484937.

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation,

Mrs. L. J. Lewis
